Gonzales Apologizes to U.S. Attorneys He Didn’t Fire

by Scott Ott · 11 Comments

(2007-03-18) — Embattled U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales made a conference call Friday to the nation’s 93 U.S. attorneys to express his “profound regret” that he didn’t “fire every last one of you when I had the chance,” according to an unnamed source who was in on the call.

The contrite Mr. Gonzales said he was sorry that only eight U.S. attorneys had lost their jobs, thus sparking a Congressional probe into accusations that the Bush administration “played politics” with political appointees.

“If we had canned the lot of you, like President Clinton did when he took office, no one could accuse President Bush of favoritism,” said Mr. Gonzales. “But we failed to disrupt every federal case in the country at once, and so I apologize that you folks have to deal with the fallout of this situation when you could have been back in private practice, making big bucks, instead of stuck in your dead-end government jobs.”

White House spokesman Tony Snow said the Attorney General’s remarks were part of the ongoing Bush administration effort “to set a new tone in Washington.”

“The president continues to believe that his administration should strive to do the right thing now and apologize for it later,” said Mr. Snow.

Playing politics with political appointees; what a novel concept…

    Andy McCarthy at NRO observes:
“Gonzales rates being defended strictly because it would be an outrage if he lost his job over this manufactured scandal. But the president shouldn’t be shocked that there isn’t exactly a tidal wave rushing to the attorney general’s defense.”

    McCarthy elaborates here.

There’s a big difference between Clinton firing all 93 U.S. Attorneys because of his own political ambitions and the Bush administration firing a handful of U.S. Attorneys … Clinton has a “D” after his name and Bush as an “R”. And we’ll just leave it to the liberal media and Demoncrats to express their continued outrage which flies in the face of these distinctions without a difference. Historical perspective will show what a shameless partisan sham this hysteria is though the Dhimmiecritters will probably end up getting their pound of flesh aided and abetted by their lap dog media.

If the Dhimmies like Patrick “Leaky” Leahy continue corrupting the legal process with their endless partisan subpoenas in hopes of exact their revenge on the Bush Administration, they may find themselves igniting a very real counter-revolution that goes beyond mere ballots. Given the sheer hatred and rancor which already exists between conservatives and liberals, the Dhimmies had better wake up to the very real possibility they are playing with matches in a powder magazine.
