(2002-10-08) — President Bush appointed Harry Belafonte, the singer best known for Day-O (The Banana Boat Song), to the U.N. weapons inspection team which will head for Iraq later this month.
The appointment comes just after Mr. Belafonte accused Secretary of State Colin Powell of being like a plantation slave doing his master’s bidding.
“Secretary Powell actually suggested the appointment,” said Mr. Bush. “So, as you can see, he bears no grudge over the remarks. In addition to Mr. Belafonte, we’re sending Tally Mon, an expert in statistics and accounting. Mr. Belafonte will oversee Mr. Mon’s work.”
Mr. Belafonte turned to Mr. Mon and said, “Come, Mr. Tally Mon, tally me plutonium.”
The evening meeting at the White House ended, Mr. Bush said, because “daylight come and he wan’ go home.”
