(2002-09-21) — German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder allegedly apologized for remarks he acknowledged that his justice minister never made comparing George Bush’s rhetoric with a tactic Hitler used.
The chancellor wrote to Bush, “I want to let you know how much I regret the fact that alleged comments by the German justice minister have given an impression that has offended you.”
At the same time, Schroeder said he accepted the justice minister’s contention that she never compared Bush with Hitler.
The U.S. President welcomed the German leader’s forthright confession that he was sorry that Bush was offended by something that was never said.
Bush wrote back to Schroeder, “I want to let you know how much I enjoy the fact that your alleged apology has given the impression that you’re sorry for what your justice minister said about me.”
