(2008-01-14) — Democrat Sen. Barack Obama today seemed to indirectly respond to presidential rival Sen. Hillary Clinton’s suggestion that Martin Luther King’s dream would have gone unfulfilled if not for President Lyndon B. Johnson who signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Sen. Clinton’s comment was meant to contrast her vast record of accomplishment and political prowess, with Sen. Obama’s mere rhetorical skills and inspirational persona, but the rookie Senator offered an analogy of his own.
“The 19th Amendment to the Constitution grants women the right to vote,” said Sen. Obama, “and while women, like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, marched, and spoke and held inspirational rallies, ultimately it took men in 36 state legislatures to fulfill that dream.”
“Now, I would not suggest,” the former Illinois state legislator added, “that it takes a man to really make change in this country, nor even that it takes someone with experience in a state legislature. I’m just sayin’.”
Sen. Clinton refused to respond directly, but the campaign release a statement in which she said: “I have nothing but respect for Barack Obama, especially because he’s currently the only African American in the U.S. Senate. I’ll do whatever it takes to help him retain that distinction.”

Wow, Maestro Ott, you have that Democrat parsing down to a science. Bravo!
And aren’t we all impressed with Madame Hillary’s “vast record of accomplishment and political prowess”? LOL
Wonder Gal that she is, the dominatrix in a pantsuit promises that the price of oil will drop $50/bbl when she ascends her rightful throne. Why, even the Iraqis are quaking in their robes, hastening their political negotiations because of Democrat electioneering!

Scott, I love the last line…funny!!! And no doubt very true.
Funny how Perot was all about “united we stand” while the movement was al about dividing the votes and defeating King George 1. I wonder if sHrillary has any ideas on how to make about a quarter of Obamamama’s followers switch over to Edwards camp. If you are at your peak of appeal to demonkeyrat voters, then how else do you win? I’m sure there are demonkeyrats that feel the same about sHrillary as we conservatives think about McCain. I don’t see her ever having majority support in an honest election, the last thing we need is a third party pooper in the mix. Granted if it is the likes of McVain vs. sHrillary I would probably vote for a third party candidate like Fred, or Duncan over them.
That scenario makes me lose faith in nearly everything……

Food for thought question.

I refuse to accept the contention by the MSM that unsatisfied voters have rejected real conservatism for Hucksters and McCainiacs. Michigan has a history of very disappointing election results, though. I hope to see a vote for a return to conservative principles, today and not a vote for retooled Republican liberals.
I’ll be doing my part!

Good election morning, Beerme. You go, guy!
Gafisher: I heard Rush yesterday too and was not surprised at all. I have NEVER liked Gingrich, but then, when I read Tom Coburn’s book, Breach of Trust (which I highly recommend), I knew why. He is a “do anything to stay in power” kinda guy and we have enough of those on the democrat side. Anyone who lives by that principle loses everytime, eventually.
I saw on the last thread that you felt like my statement on staying home was stupid, but I would like the opportunity to explain why I have come to my conclusions. I was reading scripture one day, about the crucifixion of Christ and had an epiphany. I realized that if I had been around in those days, I would have been like Peter, going after the soldiers, thinking up ways to riot and get real justice – to keep an innocent man, whom I knew to be God in the flesh, from dying at the hands of a secular government (of course the irony being that I knew who He was and that He had the power to get Himself out of that mess). But of course, Jesus, at one point when Peter told Jesus that nothing was going to happen, rebuked Peter and even called him Satan, a stumbling block. In the end, Peter ran away and didn’t participate at all in any of the proceedings and only watched from the sidelines instead of interfering, according to God’s plan. God’s marvelous plan was fulfilled, such that a new relationship was made available for the asking for any person from then on. And Peter became the “Rock on which the Church” was built.
So I realized that even though in our eyes, things don’t seem right, if we just step back and ask for God’s will to be done, He does it right every time. Therefore, I have determined that as a conservative Christian, I can’t in good conscience, give my blessing to a candidate whom I know will not be a strong and Godly leader just to win at all costs and get my way. I can step back and totally trust that God, not my vote, is in control of the future of this country and if He must take it to the depths, in order to turn it around, so be it. He will provide for those of us who trust His care.
I saw John McCain on the news this morning. The commentator noted that McCain had on his “lucky sweater” and the senator said, “Of course, and a lucky penny and any other good luck talisman I could find.” Where is trust in the Lord in that? Then, when asked if he needed Democrats and Independents to win in Michigan, he said, “And the Trotskyites, too!” He may be joking, but I didn’t find it funny at all. I found it to be pretty indicative of where he stands – on nothing. He bends with the wind and I won’t put my stamp on that kind of leadership. I voted for Jimmy Carter because he said he was a Christian who was going to bring all sides together. I won’t make that mistake again because I have learned that oftentimes, standing up for what is right does anything but bring all sides together.
So if we end up with Hillary or Obama at the helm, I am quite confident that God will take this country where it needs to go in order for a return to His glory and honor. Remember, it took a Jimmy Carter to get us a Ronald Reagan!

One of the funniest pieces that I read this morning describes the divisiveness of Madame Hillary in her civil war for party supremacy as a choice between Mother Hillary and Brother Obama.
Re Newt Gingrich: I had read sometime last week that he (and Dick Morris) have been advising Huckabee. Now, I am wary of both of these “advisors,” wondering what game that they are playing. Gingrich supposedly has put to paid Reagan conservatism, saying that it is time to move on in the Republican. He backpedaled yesterday with a piece at “The Corner” in NRO to clarify his remarks. His remarks sound weak and self-serving.

Re #25: C-A-T, I kind of understand your logic, and it’s obviously your decision to make whether or not you vote. I think the only problem with your decision is this: If Christian voters abstained from voting any time they failed to see a truly moral candidate, Christian voters would never vote.
In my mind, it’s next to impossible for a strong, uncompromised Christian leader to win an election on a national scale. Every politician has to be two- or three-faced to some degree in order to appeal to a majority (and yes, that includes swaying some Democrats, Independents, and Trotskyites). It’s simply impossible to get a majority of America to choose you without bending your platform enough to trick some voters into believing that you’re with them. That’s why I look at every election as a matter of choosing the lesser evil. And if we don’t try to vote in the lesser evil, the others will vote in the greater evil.
As a sidenote, I will say that I have been very impressed with Bush’s stand on his faith. I do believe that he is a truly upright, righteous believer in Jesus Christ as Lord. However, even Bush has compromised his values for the office of President. A couple of years ago, I remember commenting in this forum that I was greatly disappointed by a comment he made at a White House dinner for moslems, where he stated that Allah and Jehovah are one and the same. If that’s not a blatant lie in the interest of pandering, I don’t know what is.

C-A-T, you’re assuming that God still holds American in favor. That may be right now, but considering the way we’ve tried to throw Him out of all facets of our society (or keep Him penned up inside church walls), I’m a little scared. He has in the past allowed His people to bring destruction upon themselves; not out of spite, but as disciplinary measures much as a loving parent uses corporal punishment on children they love dearly.

C-A-T Re#25: I humbly apologize if it sounded as though I was referring to you rather than to the principle as “dumb.” I chose that word purposely, because it means “without a voice,” not just imprudent. I also avoided my usual practice of attributing quotes by poster and message number because I respect you too much to even tread the borders of ad hominem. I regret any offense I may have caused.
I still disagree, though; to sit back, do nothing, and wait to see what God will do is a fatalistic theology common to Islam, not Christianity. We are told to “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works …” and I believe that principle applies to our responsibilities in a democracy as much as at a job or on the street.
If we vote according to our consciences and lose, God will still ensure that “all things work together for good to those that love God.” We have been placed here and now for a purpose; I don’t want to do with my vote what the unfaithful servant did with the talent of silver entrusted to him.
34 mindknumbed kid // Jan 15, 2008 at 8:31 pm
If you don’t vote because you cannot find a worthy candidate to support as a Christian, then vote out of duty to your country. As long as the democrats run candidates that are pro-choice, and as long as republicans provide an alternative to killing the innocent, there is good reason to vote. Let God’s have the control, if his purpose is to allow evil people to rule over us, let it be because the unGodly prevailed, not because his people rolled over and let it happen. Our right to vote was won by men who gave their lives for the cause of freedom, it is our obligation to honor their sacrifices, even when the choices are not what we would want. If the election were for either sHrillary, or Satan, vote anyhow. One thing about it with one of those choices you would always know what to expect out of one of them!

Fred, I can’t say as I can prove or disprove the belly button question, nor can I know whether the trees in the Garden of Eden had growth rings inside them, or not. But I believe that when God created everything, he made it all appear as though it had always been there, we know that Adam and Eve were not newborn babes, but matured in mind and body from day one. So if I follow that logic, I would say that they were just as you and I, belly button and all.

I wonder if fellow Republicans would support putting a woman on McCain’s ticket. I know that many feel that women do not have what it takes to make command decisions, but could that be a position that we cannot afford to maintain this election?
