(2006-11-08) — President George Bush today, in an effort to find common ground with presumptive House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, accepted the resignation of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, but said he has no immediate plans to replace either Vice President Dick Cheney or First Lady Laura Bush.
“The people have spoken,” said Mr. Bush, “they want a new direction for America. Don Rumsfeld is a friend, and an excellent Secretary of Defense, but he’s old. So he’s gone. I hope this appeases Speaker Pelosi..cause I’d sure miss Cheney and Laura.”
The president named Texas A & M President Robert Gates to replace Mr. Rumsfeld, but White House officials were tight-lipped about who might be on the short list of potential replacements for the vice president or First Lady.

I’m so shameless! I’m trying not to be a bad loser, and hope it’s reflected at United Possums International.
I gave up on election coverage and started listening to headbanger music at 0630. Those screaming banshees make a lot more sense about “the new direction for America”.
24 months, and I predict a sweep of the polls. A lot can happen in thext two years, including another terrorist attack. I don’t wish that on my worst enemy, but I have a lot more faith in God than the Democrats right now. As Paul Harvey used to say, “stay tuned for news!”
14 Darthmeister // Nov 8, 2006 at 1:56 pm
Despite Lieger/neverthink/Pedro’s predictable ad hominem attacks against Rush in order to ignore the very valid point of where we are today as a nation, I’m posting them again:
1) No terrorist attack on American soil since 9/11
2) Gasoline is at 2.08/gallon national average
3) Americans are benefitting from a tax cut economy
4) Stock market is at an all time high above 12,000
5) Inflation is under 3%
6) Unemployment is at 4.4%
These are indisputable facts.
Since the Democrats, led by Nancy Pelousy, say they want to take this nation in a new direction, then I shudder to think where that direction might take us given the facts listed above.

The point of Scrappleface Mr Lewis the 3rd is to be satirical defined in Wikipedia as:
“Although satire is usually witty, and often very funny indeed, the primary purpose is not humour as such – but to criticise a person, an idea or attitude, an institution or a social practice by holding it up to ridicule, and, ideally, shaming it into reform.”
Is that not what most participants do here ?

2006-Nov-11 (AP) Thousands of Kurds have been gathering near the Turkish border following the results of the U.S. elections. “Now that Democrats have won control of the U.S. Congress, we know that that the U.S. troops will soon be redeployed to more pressing domestic conflicts like guarding abortion clinics in U.S. cities.” With Nancy Pelosi advocating the pardon of Sadaam Hussein (”Sorry, it was all just a big misunderstanding.”), most Kurds fear a return to the genocide that gripped their lands in the 80s and 90s.

39 JQ // Nov 8, 2006 at 2:28 pm
God never told people to stop praying to Him, although He frequently told them to stop whining to Him without caring who He was and what He desired of them. The ancient Israelites were usually guilty of the true definition of “taking the Lord’s name in vain;” that is, they would use His name to gain influence or to sound important, but with no understanding of Who was behind that name. Oh yeah, they would also pull it out anytime something bad happened to them, so they would have someone to blame.
America is quickly assuming that same role. Politicians and false clergy spout the name of God left and right without really understanding the Creator that name represents. 9/11 happened, so America went to church for two weeks. We haven’t had a terrorist attack on our soil since, so God’s been conveniently placed on the top shelf again, gathering dust until the next sound-byte opportunity.
America is “One Nation Under God” at face value only. While the high places and idols still exist in abundance across our land, we will continue to be a rebellious nation thumbing our noses at our Creator. With all sincerity, I pray that God will help us.

The last point that I posted on reminded me of this song by Casting Crowns. Please forgive the lyric post, if that’s not your thing, but it’s somewhat on-topic.
“What if the armies of the Lord picked up and dusted off their swords, vowed to set the captives free and not let satan have one more?
What if the church, for heaven’s sake, finally stepped up to the plate, took a stand upon God’s promise and stormed hell’s rusted gates?
What if His people prayed, and those who bare His name would humbly seek His face and turn from their own ways?
And what would happen if we prayed for those raised up to lead the way? Then maybe kids in school could pray and unborn children see light of day.
What if the life that we pursue came from a hunger for the Truth? What if the family turned to Jesus, stopped asking Oprah what to do?”
46 Jericho // Nov 8, 2006 at 2:42 pm
Before we kill these baby clones that we make in MO maybe we should consider first energy independence we all desire before we kill them? Here is a brave new thought – if we programed these babies to be somewhat reserved (slow?) we could get them to work for us – according to their ability of course and thereby free ourselves from foreign oil and thus be able to drop Israel like a hot potato. Then when all the Jews are dead and God shown to be a liar we can have our utopia and eat it too.
It’s not like Marxism doesn’t work (It’s not like Satan’s rebellion against God didn’t work) It just that it has been done right yet.

I agree, Godfrey; Democrats are not the enemy. Neither are Republicans necessarily my ally. I’ve said it before, neither party is 100% right, and neither party is 100% wrong; we just have to figure out which party has a higher right to wrong ratio. For me, it’s the Republican party, since proponents of the Democratic party consistently promote a moral code that runs contrary to my own. I don’t necessarily equate capitalism with Godliness, as do many conservative Republicans.
The financial aspect of politics is less important to me than the moral aspect of politics; after all, the same Congress that legislates tax hikes and federal spending also decides the fate of unborn children and the future of the traditional family. The LOVE of money (not money itself, but an unhealthy obsession) is the root of all evil, so basing my political decisions solely on that subject is a dangerous road.

64 conserve-a-tips // Nov 8, 2006 at 3:23 pm
JQ, I would take it a step further. It isn’t about equating capitalism or spending with Godliness, as much as it is about strictly following the constitution can be equated with honoring God. I do consider that our constitution was written with an inspiration from our creator.
The constitution placed the burden of the job of governing most squarely on the states with the national government being in charge of protecting the union of those states and the inhabitants of those states. The Democrat party has run so far from the principles of the constitution that I am not even sure that they understand what those principles are. The Republicans, for the most part, still take it seriously. In that way you can say that the constitution offers us that moral aspect of which you speak and it is only the true conservatives who honor that. In short, we are neither Republican nor Democrat. We are conservative.

69 Godfrey // Nov 8, 2006 at 3:29 pm
Jericho: given the generally conservative/centrist makeup of the Democrats who won last night I think we’re going to have a centrist rather than a leftist congress. The “majority” in the Senate (assuming Virginia goes to Webb) will be both a Democratic AND a conservative/centrist majority. The House is always more radical, but even there they realize what America won’t stand for a return to Carter-era liberalism. The Dem party leaders are already saying flatly “absolutely not” to any impeachment push, something which is so near and dear to the heart of radical leftists.
These are smart people and they know that if they lean too far leftward their power will be short-lived.
I realize you’re engaging in a bit of hyperbole here but the truth is that our country has just experienced a much-needed course correction. I think the Iraq situation, which, let’s face it has been stagnating for a while now, will benefit greatly from this wake-up call (as evidenced by Bush’s change of S.o.D.). This could be just what we needed.
In my opinion this is far from the disaster it may seem to be at first blush.

Da Bunny: You are characterizing the entire Democratic Party by the most extreme elements. Do you like it when leftist trolls claim that Pat Robertson represents the Republican party? If you look at the elections last night, the far left is NOT the faction of the Democratic Party that was elected. They are generally centrists and some are even conservatives (for Democrats, anyway). Many are Christians. Some are ex-soldiers and successful businessmen (i.e. capitalists).
Our real enemies are radical insurgents and fanatical terrorists who want to see both Democrats and Republicans (and their children) blown to pieces. I say we give the new leadership a chance to demonstrate that they understand that. Islamists rely on dissension among their enemies and irrational hatred among their own ranks. They relish opinions like the one you just expressed. Divide and conquer.
Remember that campaign rhetoric and actual policy are very different things. Political opponents and real enemies are also very different things. It is very important that over the next few years Americans remember which is which.
The Democrats will not be in power forever.

Can it be true? Is the most remarkable thing about the election last night the triumph of reason on scrappleface? It’s good to see. Lets see if it lasts.
Both Godfrey and JQ (in the land of the sleeping giant) are expressing impressive magnanimity.

Ms. RW: We now have the opportunity to hear and see some of the most outrageous comedy ever.
There’s that, too! Great point.
JQ re: #58 – …we just have to figure out which party has a higher right to wrong ratio. For me, it’s the Republican party.
Well, same here…but for different reasons. I don’t think government has any business whatsoever legislating on moral issues beyond the basics (fraud, theft, murder etc.).
When Bill Frist single-handedly outlawed online poker a few weeks ago (he inserted the ban into a bill that was already going to pass, late on a Friday night, without debate) I think he overstepped his bounds (and circumvented the spirit of the Constitution). People have the right to determine their own morality, so long as that morality doesn’t hurt other people (as I believe it does with abortion).
I think it’s a mistake to look at the financial aspects of government in terms of “greed” or “the root of all evil”. Tax legislation, minimal regulation and liberal trade policies are NOT about money, they’re about freedom. They are primarily what this country is about: small government and the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I am very concerned about the Democratic position on these topics. But I’m not that worried.
The Democrats did win, but they had to move to the right to do it.
That’s worth thinking about.

bystander re: #82 – there is, and always has been, a fair amount of reasonable discussion here at Scrappleface. Yet this is also a place where like-minded partisan Republicans feel comfortable venting. So be it. I tend not to engage in the latter but that doesn’t mean that the people who do lack the power of reason. Certainly the liberals who frequent this board don’t hesitate to engage in such activity. There are some obviously intelligent posters here on both sides. And some angry, rude ones as well.
I’m not a fan of partisan rhetoric but it would be silly not to expect it in a place like Scrappleface…or any other partisan political venue.

Remembering trolls after the 2004 elections:
BUSH STOLE ANOTHER ELECTION … ANOTHER KARL ROVE PLOT … DIEBOLD, DIEBOLD, DIEBOLD … VOTING IRREGULARITIES … VOTER INTIMIDATION … REPUBLICANS PRE-PROGRAMMED THE VOTING MACHINES … WE NEED MORE LAWYERS AND MORE RECOUNTS … ELECTIONS WERE TOO CLOSE FOR THIS TO BE AN ACCIDENT … FRAUDULENT REPUB VOTING IN OHIO … OHIO … OHIO … OHIO …
After the 2006 Elections **crickets chirping** though there were plenty close races.
And trolls dare say we haven’t been magnanimous and civil in our caustic humor? Sheesh, there’s no pleasing these partisans with such highly selective memories. I guess they want us to just lick their slimey jackboots in abject capitulation … and then they’ll be our friends. Buwhahahahahahaha! Go fish. We’ve displayed quite adult reactions to this election, unlike liberals and trolls in past elections.
BTW, liger/neverthink/bystander/Pedro/et al, you never did answer my question: Do you still believe George W. Bush stole Election 2000 (or he was “selected” by the U.S. Supreme Court) and do you still believe the 2004 Elections were also “stolen” because of voting irregularities in Ohio?

What lieger really means:
I am pro woman’s rights to murder unborn babies
I am for special rights for homosexuals
I am pro military when used by a Democratic president like in Bosnia where 24,000 American troops are still bogged down to the tune of billions of dollars a month.
I am pro respect for all religions except Christian evangelicalism/conservative Catholicism/fundamentalism.
I am pro universal healthcare so future American taxpayers can bankroll my health benefits
93 Pedro // Nov 8, 2006 at 4:47 pm
I feel that every religion has radical elements, including Christianity. Those radical elements frequently overshadow the more moderate elements of the belief.
To dismiss Islam out of hand because of the fundamentalists is no different than to dismissing the teachings of JC because of the philanderings of a certain Colorado preacher.
That’s what I mean.
P.S. And for the record, Darth, I do not believe that Bush was legitimately “elected” in 2000.

Well, let’s see.
I like my cigarettes. They’re the last vice I have left.
I reckon I don’t “edit†my thoughts. The stream of consciousness is one of the beauties of blogging. That’s a terribly nuanced concept.
My murdered father is off-limits. I’ll accept all the “Possumtripe†that can be hurled, but don’t insult a War II hero. I am within my rights to resent Greta Van Susteren; she plays at being an advocate for the slain, when it’s all about vacations in Aruba for her.
I suppose I’m a boring guy. If I’d known I was going to live this long, I’d’ve taken better care of myself.
Watch your mouth, Liger. My dad’s an ongoing hurt, and I can get plenty unboring in a New York minute. I have your URL. Great Scott doesn’t permit such excitement here. No bad talk; don’t read my blog. What’s the WWP? Workers of the World Unite? Would you get more excited if I tossed the “n-word†around freely at UPI? Despite what you might think about us rednecks, some of us were brought up better than that. Boring, but polite.
Did I leave anything out? Perhaps some comment about that holier-than-thou purity that permeates liberal thinking. It’s been a long day, full of disappointment. The pillow calls.

Jericho, to show you how insanely partisan, ideological, narrow-minded and non-inclusive liberals really are, you can be a woman or an African-American of great gifts and talents but if you don’t have that “D” behind your name they simply aren’t going to vote for you, particularly when you can vote for crooks and scumbags like Blagoyevich or any number of other, let’s say, less than stellar liberal demagogues.
Like I said, I voted for three Democrats and one Independent this last election based strictly on competency and character, so I wonder how many qualified Republican women, minorities or even white males that lieger/neverthink/bystander/donkey-brain didn’t vote for because they had an “R” behind their name.

Possumtrot,
Ya see, ol’ buddy, self-aggrandizing trolls like lieger only exist to provoke people, not to engage them in any meaningful debate because if you notice, when anyone answers him with a link documenting information which undercuts his worldview, he immediately shifts to another target with some kind of juvenile, snarky comment. I agree, the troll really does sound like a sixteen year old sitting in his basement taking great delight in tweaking his elders.
The perfect place for a troll like him/her/it would be over at the BlameBushblog. I’d love to see how he would blend perfectly with faux progressyves over at that site. It would be a real hoot and maybe a little educational for our beloved troll. But it would take real courage to do something like that instead of simply being a recalcitrant thorn in the flesh with his/her/its whacked sense of “humor” here. It’s like he’s on some Quixotic mission from Gaia to convert us all to his mind-numbing insanity which sees Christian evangelicalism as more of a threat to the natural rights of man than Muslim jihadism.

myword: from the article you cited: “Getting people to vote for moderates, in order to put extremists in power, may be the newest and biggest voter fraud.
Sorry, but that’s ludicrious. People should vote for the candidates with whom they agree on issues they find important. Republicans have diverged radically from what they’ve historically told the electorate they stood for and they’ve paid the price. My votes for “moderates” (if you can call Libertarians moderate) are exactly what democracy is all about. My vote is my political voice, not Sowell’s or anyone else’s.
The Democrats didn’t “steal” my vote…the Republicans gave it away.

As usual, upnorth and I are in total agreement. If the pro-life, pro-marriage, pro-troop, religious, etc. candidates that were elected yesterday voted according to those principals I wouldn’t care what letter is behind their name. Were people not paying attention to the stick to the party line at all costs Pelosi? The same woman who insulted the President on a regular basis, and is now calling for a return of civility to Washington? They ran conservatives to win the election, but will reserve all the far left-wingers as leaders. If conservatives with stronger spines can be found in 2008 this will work to our advantage. I see that year as potentially more important. I do, however, feel sorry for our troops and the people of Iraq who must feel very uncertain right now.

Godfrey, re: #81, I wasn’t lumping all dems together, I was referring to the party’s positions on the issues I mentioned. Yes, many of the dems who just won their new seats had to move to the center/right, and run as psuedo-conservatives, in order to win. But, I predict that many of these same “conservative democrats” will drop the “conservative” mantle now that they’re in office. They’ll HAVE to, if they want to curry any favor with their party’s “leadership.” Look at how the dems have treated people like Joe Lieberman and Zell Miller in the past, when these two men broke with the party’s far-left ideologies. I truly believe that liberal Republicans [Rino's, if you will] have been treated with respect by their party, but Lieberman has been treated like an outcast by the dems, has he not? Even if these dem “newbies” to the House and Senate are not currently “wolves in sheep’s clothing,” many will have to “cave” to the demands of the Pelosi/Reid far-left leadership in order to survive. That’s the way the dems operate, and history has proven this time and again.
As anti-national defense as the left appears to be, they certainly DO appear to me to be “the enemy,” when it comes to the security of our nation, in addition to their party’s efforts to tear down traditional values. That’s what I was getting at in post #68. I don’t trust the democrat party…and I’m a former democrat.
