According to the latest polls in Pennsylvania, former Pittsburgh Steeler Lynn Swann has nearly pulled even with Gov. Ed Rendell in the gubernatorial race. Gov. Rendell, who worked hard to bring slot-machine gambling to the Keystone State, said he can’t guarantee that he’ll win reelection in November, but he’s confident that he’ll beat the point spread, allowing him to comfortably retire from politics.

The number of senators calling for a censure vote against President Bush increased today when Vermont’s Patrick Leahy said he would back the resolution proposed by Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold and already supported by fellow Democrats Barbara Boxer and Tom Harkin. Feingold said the 33 percent increase in supporters makes his censure measure one of the “hottest bills in Senate history.”

Sen. John McCain said today that he no longer considers the Rev. Jerry Falwell an “agent of intolerance” and has agreed to deliver the commencement address at Falwell’s Liberty University in May. In return, the Rev. Falwell said he would call off planned attacks by Christian suicide bombers against soft targets in McCain’s home state of Arizona.

Faced with a U.N. resolution to stop enriching uranium by the end of April, the Islamic Republic of Iran this week tested two new missiles systems — one that can outrun any battleship and another that delivers multiple warheads. The Iranian Foreign Minister assured the U.N. Security Council that the missiles would be used only to generate cheap, abundant electricity.

And finally, President Bush signaled the start of the Major League Baseball season by throwing the ceremonial first pitch at the Cincinnati Reds home opener against the Chicago Cubs. Republicans in Congress, however, complained that the president didn’t consult with them before taking the mound, and didn’t throw the kind of pitch they wanted.
