(2005-11-22) — Top Democrats in Congress today joined Al Jazeera in calling on President George Bush to layout a timeline for the withdrawal of Vice President Dick Cheney from the executive branch of government.
The move comes a day after Sunnis and Shiites at an Arab-sponsored Iraqi reconciliation summit called for a scheduled withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-MA, and Sen. Joe Biden, D-DE, in a joint statement said, “George Bush’s dream of a civil democracy in Washington D.C. is a ridiculous fantasy. Dick Cheney’s occupation of the vice president’s office only increases partisan attacks.”
They demanded Mr. Cheney’s immediate redeployment to the private sector.
However, Mr. Bush said that providing a schedule would “only play into the hands of the enemy.”
“Dick Cheney will remain until the job is done, and not a day longer,” the president said.
